Entertaiment is a powerful force that can bring joy, stimulate learning and also have negative impacts if not regulated properly. [1] In our current society, entertainment has been industrialized and can be found in various formats such as books, music, films or games.
Entertainment evolves and can be adapted to any scale. It can be as individual as a private movie watched alone on a sofa; a banquet with food and drinks, music and dancing for two; or performances intended for thousands of people, including spectators watching live or via the internet. Activities that were necessary skills for some, such as fencing or archery, have developed into serious sports and professions for the participants but are regarded as entertainment by wider audiences.
The word entertain originates from the Latin intertenere, from the prefix inter meaning inside and the suffix tenere which means to hold, as in a stretch.
